Bio

Stephen Robeck was born in Los Angeles but moved to the NYC suburbs a youngster. His interest in photography began with a small darkroom at age ten. His father worked for Time Inc. so there were lots of books about photographers in the house. Life Magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith was an early hero.

School during the late sixties and early seventies was overshadowed by the Vietnam War and all the drama surrounding it, but Stephen managed to get through with a BA in philosophy from Lake Forest College and still found time to make photographs. He also survived five days at Woodstock.

Work life began during college with summers spent as a house painter. He did well enough to buy beer and motorcycles, but soon realized this was not a viable long-term direction. He moved to NYC and found more creative work, first in commercial photography and then in film and television production. In the mid 1980s he co-founded a creative marketing agency that eventually moved to Los Angeles. Business demands were fairly consuming until the early 2000s, but making photographs remained a focus throughout, especially during vacations spent backpacking in the Sierras.

For the past twenty years Stephen has devoted himself to mastering the modern tools and techniques of image making and presentation, studying along the way with painters of light like John Paul Caponigro. He has been exhibiting his work in a variety of galleries, first in Santa Barbara and then Santa Fe where he now lives and works.
